BOULDER, Colo. -- Leaders in Boulder unanimously passed a new measure that will establish the celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day in tandem with Columbus Day.
Passed late Tuesday, leaders said the City of Boulder has directly benefited from Indian removal policies that violated human rights.
Boulder Mayor Suzanne Jones said to those in attendance at the meeting, "I'm sorry it took so long."
Council members say they will work to turn words into action and not just celebrate the day as a counter celebration to Columbus Day.
Native American residents in attendance of the meeting said they appreciate the move, calling it a call to action and a step forward.
