IKEA probes second Denver-area store in Broomfield

BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- The world's largest furnishings retailer is probing Denver for a second store, highlighting the Broomfield community as IKEA's next home.

IKEA currently operates its first location in Centennial, but representatives say they have identified a 123-acre parcel of land below Denver at the intersection of I-25 and E. Baseline Road.

Broomfield Mayor, Randy Ahrens, told Denver7's Jason Gruenauer that this deal with IKEA was 10 years in the making.

The land would be able to be developed into a store with additional room for additional retailers, or residential uses, officials say.

"A store in this retail corridor would complement our strong presence established in Centennial and provide customers in the northern part of the Front Range an IKEA store closer to them," Lars Petersson, IKEA's U.S. president, said.

A timeline is not yet set, but IKEA representatives say the city has ignited the process of incorporating IKEA into an overarching retail plan for the I-25 retail corridor.

Estimates say it will take several years to complete a study and construction before hosting a grand opening.
