DENVER — Shots rang out in Denver Friday morning as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fired upon a person after a traffic stop.
Denver Chief of Police Robert White confirmed to Denver7 the agent attempted a traffic stop on an unidentified driver near West Louisiana Avenue and South Inca Street early Friday when that person ran from the officer on foot.
"This was a traffic stopped [sic] Huron and Louisiana and then the individual fled and ended at Louisiana where some sort of confrontation happened and the shot was fired," Chief White said.
The ICE agent reportedly chased the person on foot and eventually fired shots, grazing that person in the head with a bullet.
The man was reportedly holding "an edged weapon in his hand" before he was shot at, according to a statement from the Denver Police Department.
The person, who police have yet to release the identity of, suffered non-life threatening injuries and is currently being treated. Police in Denver said they did arrest the person afterwards.
The suspect is being held for investigation of first-degree assault to a pace officer in addtion to the original outstandig warrants.
It's unknown if ICE had a detainer or warrant to pull over the driver. ICE said in a 2:30 p.m. response to Denver7 they are internally investigating the shooting.
"On June 9, deportation officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) stopped a vehicle in Denver while conducting a targeted arrest of an individual with conviction for unlawful sexual contact. During the encounter, there was an officer-involved shooting. The injured suspect was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility.
The incident has been referred to the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility for investigation and no further details will be released at this time."
Denver Police say the investigation is ongoing.
