AURORA, Colo. — One person died after a head-on crash on Interstate 225 near Illiff Avenue on Monday just after 6:30 a.m.

The highway re-opened shortly before 1 p.m., police said.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes, but the southbound side of the interstate also closed for about 30 minutes. Northbound traffic was being forced off at Parker Road. Northbound traffic can get back onto I-225 at the Mississippi Avenue on-ramp.

Police said a Dodge Charger had entered I-225 from Iliff and was going south in the northbound lanes when it crashed into the passenger side of a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

After hitting the truck, the Dodge continued south in the northbound lanes and struck a Mazda SUV head-on. The driver of the Dodge Charger died at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Chevrolet truck was not injured.

Police are still investigating the crash. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dash cam footage of the crash is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
