AURORA, Colo. – Families in Aurora’s poorest neighborhoods are getting easier access to a federal program that provides free meals to school children.

The Aurora Public School District is expanding the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) to include 10 elementary schools in the city’s north side, the Denver Post reported.

Unlike traditional free or reduced-cost meal programs, CEP allows students to receive free meals without having their families fill out and submit applications to determine eligibility.

The program, established in 2010, is designed to help families in low-income areas get the proper nutrition.

The APS program began last year with four elementary schools, the paper reported. But five more schools met the eligibility requirement this year to be added to its Universal Breakfast and Lunch Program.

The Aurora elementary schools participating in the program are:
  • Boston P-8
  • Crawford
  • Fulton
  • Kenton
  • Laredo
  • New Legacy
  • Paris
  • Sable
  • Sixth Avenue
