DENVER – A Denver man arrested in California after pipe bombs were allegedly found in a downtown Denver hotel will made his first appearance in a Colorado courtroom Monday.
Adam Hayat, 35, is charged with possession of a destructive device that was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, for which he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
Hayat was arrested in Los Angeles on Feb. 16. Sources told Denver7 that an unpaid bill at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Denver tipped off investigators, who found unexploded pipe bombs in a safe in the room where Hayat was staying. Investigators said a note written in lipstick on a mirror referenced post-traumatic stress and the word “explosives.”
Investigators tracked Hayat’s cell phone to a Holiday Inn in Los Angeles, where he was arrested without incident.
It appears Hayat has lived in Denver since 2012 and registered a landscaping firm using the address of the St. Francis Center homeless shelter on Curtis Street.
Hayat went before a judge at 2 p.m. Monday to hear the charge against him. Assistant U.S. Attorney Julia Martinez said prosecutors would seek detention, saying Hayat is both a flight risk and "a danger to the community."
The judge, prosecutors and Hayat's attorney agreed to delay the detention hearing until Hayat's arraignment on Thursday.
