LOVELAND, Colo. — A Loveland dive team rescued a horse from the surface of a frozen pond off South County Road 9E on Tuesday morning.

Loveland Fire Rescue Authority Battalion Chief Tim Smith said that after getting a report of a horse on ice, about 24 firefighters staged near a pond just east of the road at 6:58 a.m. A mare had escaped her pasture and had wandered onto the ice, where she could not longer gain traction.

"She was just out there, standing and staring at us," Smith said. "Eventually she fell down. She tried to move again, but she kept falling down."

The pond is in the 800 block of South County Road 9E, just north of Colo. 402.

Smith said that eventually the mare stayed down, and four dive rescuers walked onto the ice to calm her and keep her from attempting to get up again.
