A homeowner who was tied up when he tried to show two potential buyers items he was selling on Craigslist, shot and killed one of the buyers when they tried to steal his car and flee.

The shooting took place on South Taft Court, near South Simms and West Arlington Avenue, around 9 a.m.

Two men came to the home expressing interest in a Craigslist ad post by the homeowner, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

While they were pretending to look at items for sale, they tied up the homeowner, according to Jacki Kelley, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

The suspects then took the keys to the homeowner's Ford. When they went outside to steal it, the homeowner got free and grabbed a handgun, Kelley said.

The homeowner ran outside and fired several shots at the suspects as they fled in the Ford and a gold Mustang.

The suspect in the Focus was shot multiple times. He was taken to St. Anthony's Central Hospital where died a short time later.

Deputies found the gold Mustang Monday morning but are still searching for the suspect who got away.

It was unclear if the homeowner would face any charges. He was being questioned by investigators Sunday afternoon.

Authorities Denver7 spoke with recommend that you always have a witness with you if you're trying to sell something on Craiglist and have someone else coming into your home.

The Sheriff’s Office is still searching for the gold Mustang, driven by a Hispanic male in his forties.  Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 303-271-5612 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).
