WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. – It’s not every day you get a chance to own a piece of Colorado history.

The current owner of one of the oldest homes in Wheat Ridge recently listed the property for sale, with an asking price of $550,000.

The home, located at 7180 W. 35th Ave., was built by the Everitt family in 1864 as part of a 160-acre homestead.

Martin Everitt and his family came to Colorado in a covered wagon from Ohio in 1863 during the gold rush, according to the Wheat Ridge Historical Society. The home’s owner said she found old wagon wheels in the backyard and also found newspapers from the 1860s when she was renovating the home.

The Everitt House is steeped in history and Horace Greeley, the newspaper editor and politician for whom the city of Greeley is named, once stayed there. Martin Everitt himself was a prominent figure in Wheat Ridge and helped create the city’s first school district. Everitt Middle School carries his name to this day.

While the Everitts were building the home, they reportedly camped at Sloan’s Lake at night to avoid problems with local natives.

The home now has four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a total of 2,331 square feet. The owner says she would like to see the historic property turned into a bed and breakfast.
