WESTMINSTER, Colo. — Authorities are working to fix damage to a popular Colorado highway this weekend after the pavement buckled.

On Friday morning, Tamara Rollison with the Colorado Department of Transportation said crews were assessing the damage on the Boulder Turnpike, U.S. Highway 36. The crack is near the Church Ranch Boulevard overpass.

The large buckle in the roadway is in the eastbound lanes, just west of the overpass. Emergency roadwork has started in the area.

The eastbound and managed lanes of the road are closed, and eastbound traffic is only being allowed through on the right-hand shoulder.

Repair will likely last at least through the weekend, according to CDOT, and possibly longer. Drivers should expect long delays in the area.

Rollison said the damage could possibly be due to heat.
