Harvey leads to flight cancellations in Denver; gas prices likely to go up in coming weeks

Posted

DENVER – The remnants of Hurricane Harvey are hundreds of miles away but their effects are being felt in Denver and around the country.

The storm has forced the closure of at least 10 oil refineries in the Houston and Corpus Christie areas. Those refineries can process up to 2.2 million barrels of crude oil into gas and other products, meaning there’s less gas to go around and prices will almost certainly go up.

GasBuddy.com petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan told USA Today that prices would likely rise 5 to 15 cents in the Rocky Mountain region and the rest of the West. Analysts say it often takes about a week for drivers to start seeing the increases at the pump.

The storm also resulted in a number of canceled flights in and out of Denver International Airport. FlightAware showed 19 canceled flights destined for Houston on Monday and 18 that had been scheduled to arrive in Denver from Houston.
