DENVER — Severe weather slammed swathes of the Denver metro area along with much of the Front Range as storms developed late Thursday afternoon, bringing hail and lightning as the rush hour commute got underway.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for Denver, Aurora and Lakewood until 4 p.m. Radar showed multiple cells with the capability of dropping significantly sized hail over Fort Collins as the storm moved southeast at about 30 miles per hour.

There was also a Flood Advisory until 4:30 p.m. for western Weld and eastern Larimer counties.

For those living in areas that may be impacted by hail, First Alert Weather Chief Meteorologist Mike Nelson suggested that you get your car in a good, safe spot and make sure to have your car windows closed.

"This will be a fairly, quick storm as the storm is narrow and is moving fast," Nelson said. But that wasn't the only storm affecting Colorado.

There was another severe storm in the Greeley area and heavy weather in Colorado Springs and surrounding areas. Police there said El Paso County would be under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 10 p.m.
In Greeley, Good Samaritans were spotted pushing a car through a flooded area near a Dairy Queen store:

Weld County government officials posted on Facebook that the following streets were closed due to the storms:

  • WCR 44/45 to WCR 49 closed due to downed power lines
  • WCR 40/43 to WCR 45 closed due to downed power lines
  • WCR 37/46 to WCR 48 closed due to downed power lines and trees
  • WCR 52/23 to Hwy 257 closed due to downed trees

A Flash Flood Warning was also issued for Poudre Park in Larimer County until 4:30 p.m. Moments later, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning including Byers, Keenesburg and Peoria was also in effect until 5 p.m.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for both the town of Genoa and Lincoln County as a whole until 5:15 p.m. by the National Weather Service - Boulder division.

A Tornado Warning was issued for eastern Adams County until 5:15 p.m.

Nelson went on Facebook to talk about this storm and offer some tips to protect yourself and your property from hail damage.
