GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A Grand Junction man accused of drowning his neighbor’s cat is now facing a charge of aggravated animal cruelty.
Mesa County Animal Services cited Ed Haynes Wednesday for allegations he drowned the cat in his bathtub after trapping it in his backyard.
Haynes told Denver7 partner KJCT that he trapped the cat, named Little Mister by its owner, after it had repeatedly entered his yard, becoming a nuisance.
Little Mister’s owner contacted animal services July 25 after confronting Haynes about her missing cat. Haynes was charged Monday after a necropsy was performed.
Haynes told the ABC affiliate that he reached out to animal services several times about trespassing cats before taking matters into his own hands.
Haynes could face jail time and fines of up to $100,000 if found guilty.
