Fremont County crash video draws attention to ‘move over' law

Posted

FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. -- Fremont County officers were assisting a crash victim on Highway 50 when a passing semi-tractor trailer careened into the rear of the parked patrol cars. Multiple injuries were reported. No officers were hurt.

The video was posted to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page Friday as a public service announcement. A sheriff’s deputy vehicle and a Florence officer’s car were damaged in the crash.

The chilling video showing the Feb. 2 crash demonstrates the purpose of the Colorado’s move over law, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said.

The law requires drivers to move over at least one lane when approaching an emergency vehicle with its lights on, or slow down if they are unable to change lanes.

Multiple campaigns to educate drivers about the law have been launched in the wake of several incidents.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Cody Donahue was killed November of last year after he was hit by a driver of a food delivery truck that failed to move over.
