Several transit agencies across the west and southwest — including Colorado — will soon have electric buses.

On Aug. 24, the U.S. Federal Transit Agency (FTA) announced its 2018 Low- and No-Emission bus grants, according to the Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP).

The FTA awarded a total of $84.4 million to 52 different agencies around the country. Seven agencies in Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah will receive $9.2 million.

The Colorado grants recipients are:

  • Eagle County Transportation Authority
  • Breckenridge, CO’s “Electric Breck” plan
  • Summit County, CO
  • Estes Park, CO

The funds will help purchase not only the buses, but the charging infrastructure.

SWEEP said it applauds the agencies for starting the transition to electric buses, which will reduce energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and transit agency operating costs.
