AURORA, Colo. — A garden in Aurora will soon feature a sculpture honoring victims and survivors of the 2012 theater shooting.
The 7/20 Memorial Foundation announced the installation for a memorial monument to remember the 70 people injured and 13 killed in the July 2012 mass shooting at the Century Movie Theatre in Aurora.
The city of Aurora is building a memorial garden while the foundation adds artwork and benches to enhance the space. Families of the victims, survivors and others impacted by the tragedy collected money to fund the monument, which will be placed in that garden, said Cherry Hepburn with the foundation.
Douwe Blumberg, an internationally renowned sculptor, created the piece, titled “Ascentiate.” The structure features 83 cranes representing the victims and survivors of the shooting. Thirteen of the cranes in the center are translucent to honor those who died.
Construction will begin July 2 and a dedication ceremony is planned for July 27 at 6:30 p.m., Hepburn said.
