DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- A Fort Lewis College student has been fined $250 for defacing ancient Native American ruins while on a trip to Utah.

The Durango Herald reports that a Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman said Wednesday that the agency mailed a citation to one student, though she did not identify the person.

A group of 10 students who participated in a Fort Lewis College Outdoor Pursuits overnight trip in October were under fire after some of them wrote on the ruins in black charcoal.

Photos surfaced showing the words "Fort Lewis College OP 2016" written on the rock wall of Fish Mouth Cave in the Comb Ridge area near Bluff, Utah.

College officials say they have decided not to punish the students but have reached out to the BLM to have students fix graffiti at the site.
