FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Fort Collins Police Department has welcomed a new four-legged member to the team.
K-9 Eleiko is a 1-year-old Dutch Shepherd. He was born in Holland and imported from Germany before he was selected to join the police department.
The K-9 and his handler completed 10 weeks of intense training to get Eleiko ready to serve the Fort Collins community, including eight weeks at DNA K9 in North Carolina. The K-9 will live with his handler throughout his career and retirement.
K-9 Eleiko will work as a patrol and narcotics detection canine. He is trained to both locate and apprehend criminal suspects and sniff out the location of illegal drugs.
The police department has four other dual-purpose K-9s and one single-purpose explosives detection K-9. They were used more than 600 times in 2018.
