Flaggers return to some RTD crossings after company finds glitch at gates

DENVER — Flaggers who were stationed at A-line crossings when the RTD line opened in 2016 have returned to those posts after the company discovered a glitch with some gates.

The flaggers had been completely removed from the A-line in July after the Federal Railroad Administration and the Colorado Public Utilities Commission signed off on the safety aspects of the gates.

But RTD confirmed with Denver7 that the flaggers were reinstated at three A-line crossings and one B-line crossing as an added safety precaution. The move comes after RTD discovered a software bug with some of its gates.

RTD staff discovered the glitch while conducting tests along the G-line, which has yet to open. RTD said there was one trip that did not meet the threshold required to activate the safety gates.

That discovery caused RTD to reevaluate the whole system. The company determined the whole system needed an upgrade.

The flaggers are now stationed at the A-line crossings at York, Clayton and Steele, as well as a B-line crossing near a railyard.

RTD has not said how long these flaggers will stay at the crossings.
