AURORA, Colo. — The Aurora community is getting ready to say its final goodbyes to Mayor Stephen Hogan. Hogan passed away on Sunday after a months-long battle with cancer.

Hogan announced that cancer diagnosis in March. Last Wednesday, he announced he was leaving the hospital and entering into hospice care. Then on Sunday, the family announced Hogan’s passing.

On Friday, the city of Aurora will host a retiring ceremony in Hogan’s honor. It will happen at the Aurora Municipal Center at 9 a.m. and will be attended by the Aurora Joint Honor Guard.

That honor guard is composed of members from the city’s police and fire departments.

During that ceremony, two American flags will be raised for 15 minutes. They will then be lowered, folded and presented to the Hogan family at his funeral.

The mayor’s memorial service is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.

The service will happen at the Heritage Christian Center and the doors will open at 10 a.m. More information about where to park can be found here.

Mayor Hogan spent decades serving the Aurora and Colorado communities.

He served as a Colorado State Representative from 1975 to 1976. He was a member of the Aurora city council for 24 years before taking on the role of mayor. Hogan served as the mayor from 2011 until his death. He was also a candidate for Congress twice.

Hogan leaves behind his wife, children and step-children. He was 69 years old.
