Family: Teen knocked unconscious, left by road

A 16-year-old girl was attacked or hit by a car on Mother's day, leaving her unconscious on the side of the road according to Denver police.

The victim's family suspects it was an attack based on where she was found by an unknown person who called police. The teen was found two and half blocks from where she was supposed to meet her grandmother who came to walk her home that night.

Police think whatever happened that night, it was about 9:15 p.m. when the teen was injured and then found at South Hazel Court and West Gill Place. The right side of the victim's face is swollen, one eye barely open and family members say all of the bones in her face were broken on that side.

"She was so disoriented after the blows that she walked the complete wrong direction home," said Leah Dupree, the teen's mother. "We know these streets where we live at night, anywhere, we can make it home. But she was so disoriented that she walked down a random street and collapsed in front of someone's house."

According to her grandmother, Ruth Harrison, the teen failed to show up at her bus stop at West Exposition Avenue and South Federal Boulevard. Harrison got a call 15 minutes past when she was supposed to show.

"She calls me and she says, 'Mama, I'm on Hazel and Gill.' I'm like, 'Why are you there?'" Harrison recalled saying.

"I don't know but my face hurts really bad and there's a lot of police here," the teen told her grandmother.

The girl has no recollection of how she ended up on that block. Harrison said the girl will have to undergo surgery to repair her face.

Currently, police say it's an open investigation, but they don't have much other information. The family is pleading with the public for help.

"Whoever called the police, I really appreciate it. Thank you so much. But will you please come forward," Harrison said. "Tell us what you know, what you've seen. We really need to get some answers about why my granddaughter was assaulted for no reason."
