Erie lot owner paid $100K to remove eagle's nest

Posted

Property owner Section 4 Investors paid $100,000 to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to cut down a cottonwood tree with a bald eagle's nest near the intersection of Weld County Road 7 south of Colo. 52 in Erie.

Neighbor Jack Daniels said the amount seems like too small of a price to pay to displace an American icon.

Daniels said he's upset that more than a month later, two or three bald eagles still fly around his house, but do not appear to have built a new nest. The eagles drink from a water tank Daniels has for his animals, he said.

Daniels used to see as many as five bald eagles around the nest before the tree was cut down late last year. Daniels' house is on the east side of Weld County Road 7 near Colo. 52.

"It's a mess. It's disturbing that they got by with what they did," Daniels said. "It just doesn't seem right to me."
