JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — The Elephant Butte Fire near Evergreen is 60% contained as of Wednesday morning, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Later Wednesday, authorities were planning to reopen all nearby road closures at 3 p.m. Evergreen Lake was to remain closed through Wednesday evening and Alderfer/Three Sisters Park will remain closed until the weekend.

The fire, which broke out Monday afternoon, forced residents in more than 1,000 households to evacuate the area. All evacuation orders were lifted at 7 p.m. Tuesday thanks to passing storms.

Fire crews were working to improve the line around the blaze and quiet hot spots on Wednesday, the sheriff's office said.
