DENVER – The University of Denver’s “free speech” wall got a makeover Friday after hateful messages were written on it in recent weeks.

Students held a sit-in to protest hate speech before painting over the wall.

“It really disturbed me that people would say something about another race,” said one student at the sit-in. “We are all people, and it doesn’t matter what skin color you are. You should never say something bad about the person on that wall.”

Among the messages that had appeared on the wall were lyrics to the Minor Threat song, “Guilty of Being White,” and a Black Lives Matter message that was altered to simply say “Lives matter.”

After the sit-in, the students met with the university’s chancellor to further discuss the issue.
