DURANGO, Colo. – A Durango Police officer saved the life of a choking baby while on a separate call at a Durango apartment complex Sunday night.
Corporal Juan Gallegos was dispatched to a call of a suicidal man armed with a knife inside one of the units at the complex, according to the Durango Police Department’s Facebook page. Police say the man had a torch and was threatening to start a fire.
Corporal Gallegos ran into the building, and just as he approached the man with the torch, a neighbor in the complex frantically ran up to the officer saying that her baby was choking.
Corporal Gallegos requested an ambulance and immediately took the baby and administered first aid until the baby started crying. Corporal Gallegos gave the baby back to her mother and told her that the ambulance would be arriving shortly, according to the Facebook post.
Corporal Gallegos continued on the call with the suicidal man. Corporal Gallegos talked to the suicidal man about getting help, and another officer took him to the hospital.
On Monday, Corporal Gallegos went back to the apartment complex to check on the baby. The Facebook post said the baby is doing very well.
