GOLDEN, Colo. — A man charged with causing a chain-reaction crash in Lakewood that killed a mother and her son in 2017 pleaded guilty Wednesday to three felony counts.
Chris Cumsille, 46, pleaded guilty in a Jefferson County District Court to child abuse resulting in death, vehicular homicide-reckless, and vehicular assault in the vehicular homicide death of 43-year-old Anna Huffman and her 3-year-old son Jason Huffman. Lianne Nelson, a third victim, was also injured in the chain-reaction collision.
On Nov. 13, 2017, Cumsille was driving a Ford pickup westbound on Alameda Avenue whenhe crashed into the rear of Huffman’s minivan stopped at a red light at the Oak Street intersection.
The collision pushed the minivan into the next car stopped in front of hers, creating a chain reaction crash involving a total of six vehicles.
According to an arrest affidavit, Cumsille told police he “blacked out” before the crash and had no recollection of the collision.
Two hours after the crash, he submitted to a blood sample. The results indicated he had over 4 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood in his system, the document read.
Cumsille will be sentenced on Feb. 22. He is facing a prison sentence of up to 25 years.
