DENVER — Dozens of people have been standing in line outside at Stranahan’s distillery in Denver since Sunday, waiting for a week for the chance to buy some limited-edition whiskey.

The distillery only releases the snowflake whiskey for one day a year, and it only sells about 1,500 bottles at a time.

The tradition started in 2007. Master Distiller Rob Dietrich started combining barrels and different cask finishes to come up with a unique type of whiskey.

“In nature, no two snowflakes are exactly alike, so every batch is always uniquely different,” he said.

The bottles sell for $100 each and there is a two-bottle-per-person limit. Dietrich said he expects the line to fill up by midnight Friday.

“It's very exciting," he said. "I’m very flattered that people are waiting for days on end for (the) opportunity to purchase something I’ve created and made."

The bottles officially go on sale Saturday morning.
