DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. -- Douglas County School Board Director Doug Benevento has resigned his position effective Wednesday.
Benevento has been elected twice to the school board, first in 2009, with his current term running through 2017.
On his biography page, Benevento is described as an attorney who received his B.A. from the University of Colorado, his M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and his J.D. from the University of Denver.
In a statement to Denver7 Wednesday, School Board President Meghann Silverthorn said, "Director Benevento was a longtime friend and colleague of mine on the board. I truly appreciate his service to the families of our district and I regret that he cannot fulfill his term. I look forward to announcing steps for his replacement appointment in the very near future in accordance with state statute."
The board will now work to solicit applications from people who are eligible, conduct interviews and vote on a board replacement to fill the seat until the election in November 2017.
Director Ann-Marie Lemieux told Denver7 in a statement, "I appreciate Mr. Benevento's volunteer service to our schools and community. I wish him the best."
