DENVER -- High school students in Colorado will soon be able to choose diet soft drinks again after the State Board of Education lifted a ban Wednesday.
A vote to rescind the ban succeeded Wednesday, modifying Colorado's healthy beverages policy, giving schools individual control over what drinks they serve.
The new policy won't impact after school rules when the ban on sugary soft drinks will still be in effect.
Board members didn't unanimously pass the revision to the ban. Three members voted against the change, with four voting for it.
The policy change found support due to the ability for individual school districts to make their own rules on banned drinks.
Some schools see sugary soft drinks as a means to more revenue. Others don't want to compromise the health of their students.
Middle and elementary schools will continue to only be allowed to serve 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices, milk and water.
