DIA bracing for busy 4th of July holiday travel period

Posted

DENVER — The Denver International Airport is expecting hundreds of thousands of travelers to pass through its doors over the Fourth of July holiday.

An estimated 202,000 passengers came to DIA Friday for the holiday. It was one of the airport’s busiest days ever.

Monday is expected to be another busy day with an estimated 188,000 travelers, according to airport officials.

Next week, DIA is expecting to see two of the busiest travel days of the entire year with 205,000 passengers heading through the airport on each day.

With these numbers, this summer is set to shatter last year’s record-setting numbers. Seventy of the airport's top 100 busiest days ever happened in 2017, with the busiest day in DIA history being June 30. An estimated 197,276 passengers traveled that day.

Because of the high volume of travelers, the airport is asking people to arrive at least two hours before their flight is set to take off.

The Transportation Security Administration is bracing for the bump in travelers, saying it could see record-breaking numbers this summer. The TSA has ramped up some of its security measures in recent months, paying more attention to powders that are brought through the security screening lines.

Overall, airport traffic is also up this summer. Nationwide, an estimated 246 million people are expected to catch a flight between June 1 and August 31.
