Denver7 Books for Kids drive helps local children in need get books to read

For the third year in a row, Denver7 is continuing its efforts to give books to school-aged children in need.

The Denver7 Books for Kids book drive was created after teacher Kyle Schwartz of Doull Elementary asked students to finish the sentence "I Wish My Teacher Knew."

"Some notes are heartbreaking, like 'I wish my teacher knew I don't have pencils at home to do my homework.' I care deeply about each and every one of my students and I don't want any of them to have to suffer the consequences of living in poverty, which is my main motivation for teaching," said Schwartz.

"I Wish My Teacher Knew" inspired Schwartz to ask for support in creating a book drive for kids in need. Denver7, The Salvation Army and La Fogata restaurant are answering that call.

You can help by donating gently used books at seven Salvation Army stores and three La Fogata restaurant locations pinned on the map below. You can also drop off children’s books in the bin outside Denver7 at 123 East Speer Blvd. in Denver.

Those who donate to the book drive at participating Salvation Army Family Stores will receive 40% off their total purchase (up to $200). This offer valid from May 1, 2017 to May 22, 2017.

Those who donate at a La Fogata restaurant will receive a free dessert with each donation (one per table). This offer valid from May 1, 2017, to May 22, 2017.

La Fogata will also donate 20% of their food and non-alcoholic beverage proceeds for the entire day on May 22, including phoned-in takeout orders.

In addition, Denver7 talent and staff will distribute more than 3,000 new books to schoolchildren in need at Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park in Denver on May 11, 2017. These new books for kids are possible thanks to two child literacy campaigns: Scripps Howard Foundation Book Campaign and the Magic of Storytelling Campaign with Disney, ABC and First Book.
