DENVER — The Denver Zoo’s sloth family has welcomed its newest member.

Charlotte, a 23-year-old Linne’s two-toed sloth, gave birth to her latest offspring on Thursday, April 11. Zoo staff announced her pregnancy in December and expected the birth to take place in February or March, but sloth births can be especially difficult to predict, the zoo said.

The baby sloth, whose sex has yet to be determined, is “very healthy,” according to zoo veterinary staff.

Charlotte and her newborn are bonding while older sister Ruth, who was born in Jan. 2018, and dad Elliot, are being kept out of the exhibit.

Staff say the newborn sloth will keep a tight hold on mom for the next six months or so.

The public can see Charlotte and her baby in the Bird World exhibit. Zoo staff say the best time to see them is in the late afternoon when Charlotte is most likely to be moving around.
