DENVER -- Members of the local Sikh community say they're trying to live up to what their religion teaches -- unconditional service for humanity.
They collected enough cash to purchase thousands of N95 and other medical masks from business contacts in the U.S. and donated them to local law enforcement and hospitals.
Kenwarbir Sandhu, the president of the Colorado Singh Sabha, told Denver7 that over the last three weeks, they've given masks to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Adams County Sheriff's Office, Broomfield Police and Fire Departments, nursing homes, hospitals, and to customers and staff at several locally owned businesses.
"We have to help," Sandhu said, "and we figured this was the right way to do it."
Sandhu said as the COVID-19 crisis unfolded, community members saw there was a desperate shortage of masks and decided to try to do something about it.
"We just want the public to know the Sikh community of Denver is doing this, that we too want to help," he said, adding that their worship center has a kitchen that is available, if needed, and some space for shelter.
Sandhu said they are collecting more cash from community members and will try to purchase more masks for delivery to first responders as soon as possible.
