Denver’s top public safety official is resigning less than two years after taking the job.
Executive Director of Public Safety Troy Riggs said Monday evening that he will step down this month for a job in the private sector. Riggs managed the public safety department’s $450 million budget and oversaw the city’s police, fire and sheriff’s departments as well as the 911 dispatch center.
Riggs will take a job as a vice president of an “up-and-coming” company that he declined to name, though he said the company is not based in Denver. His resignation was first reported by Colorado Politics.
“On a personal level, one of the reasons I’m leaving is I just finished 30 years in public safety,” Riggs said. “I knew when I was working for Mayor Hancock that this would be my last public safety job.”
When he took the executive director position in February 2018, Riggs told The Denver Post that he was committed to the city despite changing jobs eight times in the 10 years before he accepted the Denver job. He worked as a deputy director in the safety department for a few months before Mayor Michael Hancock appointed him to the executive director position.
