DENVER — More than 20,000 people in the Denver metro area were without power Tuesday evening after a very large power outage.

Around 8:30 p.m., Xcel Energy had reported at least 130 outages in the area. The largest outage occurred in the neighborhoods around and in Capitol Hill, according to the company's outage map.

A representative from Xcel told Denver7 that an issue at a substation in uptown Denver is the cause of the outages. The down substation is affecting customers as far away as Aurora.

Xcel tweeted that crews are hoping to restore power by 11:30 p.m. Around of 9:45 p.m., there were reports of power coming back on in areas hit by the outage.

Meanwhile, Denver police tweeted that they are in communication with Xcel Energy and are ready to respond.
