SEDALIA, Colo. – An off-duty Denver Police sergeant is facing DUI charges following a crash that sent him to the hospital Thursday night.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, Sgt. Randy Penn, 59, was drunk when he drove his Jeep off an access road near Colorado Highway 85 near Sedalia.

After the Jeep left the road, troopers say it collided with a sign and then continued down an embankment. It came to a rest on its wheels just before a culvert, a CSP report noted.

Paramedics transported Sgt. Penn to Sky Ridge Hospital with serious injuries. He was later released and is now facing several charges, including DUI, careless driving and possession of a weapon while under the influence.

The Denver Police Department confirmed to Denver7 Monday evening Sgt. Penn has worked with the department for more than 30 years. He is currently assigned to the department’s SWAT unit.

Tyrone Campbell, a Denver Police spokesperson, said Sgt. Penn was on vacation in a private vehicle at the time of the crash.

Campbell said the department would address its concerns with Penn once he returns from vacation. He couldn’t say what that entailed or when Penn would return.
