DENVER – Denver police are investigating a multiple-vehicle crash that involved Chief of Police Robert White Friday morning.

Officers said White was driving to the gym between 5 and 5:30 a.m. when he was hit by an eastbound minivan at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Willow Street. The suspect kept driving eastbound on 16th and White made a u-turn to follow the van, police said.

The chief then witnessed the driver hit another vehicle at 16th and Yosemite. The chief got out of his vehicle and began helping the driver of that car and the suspect, who had been ejected from the vehicle.

Both drivers were taken to a nearby hospital, one with serious injuries and the other critical. Chief White also was transported for evaluation.

Police said they have an active criminal investigation and they're working with the District Attorney's Office to determine any possible charges. Neither driver has been identified.

The intersection of 16th and Yosemite is closed while officers investigate the crash.
