DENVER — Police say twin toddlers are safe after two suspects stole a car with the children in the back seat Wednesday morning.
Denver police said the car was stolen from the area of 5th Avenue and Meade Street around 7:30 a.m. with the twin 2-year-olds inside at the time. The mother of the boys had returned to her home to pick up her older son and take him to school and had briefly ran inside when the vehicle was stolen. She said the vehicle was stolen in the span of about a minute.
Police used an application to track her cell phone, which was left inside the vehicle, to the location where it was abandoned. Officers said shortly after 8 a.m. that the vehicle had been found a few blocks away and the children were safe.
A Denver police commander said the vehicle was found near S. Quitman St. and W. Cedar Ave. -- about 10 blocks from there it was taken. He said both children were still strapped into their car seats.
Police said they were looking for two suspects: a taller man and a heavy-set female whose hair was dyed purple or red. Officers said they are believed to be connected to a white 2010 Kia Sol.
Chief Paul Pazen warned people again not to leave their car unattended while it is running, and noted there were 372 "puffers" stolen between Oct. 1 of last year and April 1 in this year in Denver.
The mother called the ordeal "the worst" half-hour of her life and said she was extremely grateful for Denver police officers' quick work. She said her children were fine and that she would never leave her car running and unlocked again.
"I knew it was a possibility but it never occurred to me it would really happen to me," she said.
