DENVER -- Colfax Avenue is a popular place to grab a drink or catch a concert but one resident describes certain parts as "sketchy." The Colfax Business Improvement District is hoping to change that perception.

Beginning this month Denver police added 100 plus hours of dedicated foot and bike patrols to Colfax Avenue. The concept started with a pilot program to demonstrate the need for an increased police presence.

Private security with Mile High Protection Services began their patrols on Colfax in early September.

"What that showed was that their presence on the street made a difference," said Frank Locantore, Director for the CBID.

Police are focusing their efforts between Grant and Josephine Streets.

"So we do get tourists there, so that’s part of the equation, but it is for the day to day residents that live in the community," said Locantore.
