DENVER – Don’t put away those snow shoes just yet. Old Man Winter may not be done with Denver, as demonstrated over the past weekend.

Although the chances of Denver getting any trace of the white stuff in the next seven days are slim, the month of May typically sees 1.7 inches of snow.

In fact, in six out of the last 10 years, May has been the month the Denver area has gotten its last measurable snowfall for the season. The latest date for snow to fall in Denver for the season was June 12, 1947.

Here are the dates of last measurable snow in the last 10 years, according to the National Weather Service:

April 30, 2016
May 10, 2015
May 12, 2014
May 2, 2013
April 3, 2012
May 11, 2011
May 12, 2010
April 27, 2009
May 14, 2008
April 14, 2007

Not only can it snow in May, it can REALLY snow in May. The most snow to ever fall in the month was in 1898 when 15.5 inches of frozen crystalline water fell to the ground. The snowfall measurement in 1950 came to 13.7 inches, the second snowiest May on record.

But most of us would be happy if this past weekend’s snowstorm was our last taste of winter. That storm put Denver’s snowfall level at 21.8” for the season, which means we're only a half inch above the least snowiest season ever on record!
