DENVER -- Firefighters with the Denver Fire Department have begun helping administer COVID-19 vaccines.

At least 50 firefighters from the department have been trained by local hospitals in administering the shot, according to Captain Greg Pixley.

"Interestingly enough you start by providing the shot to an orange," said Pixley. "There is a degree of similarity between an orange and the process of actually inserting the needle in the arm of someone."

Pixley said the department was thrilled to take part in helping citizens in the city and county of Denver.

"This is an exciting time or the Denver Fire department because we are at the forefront of assisting the city and county
of Denver and the state of Colorado in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine," he said.

The department is not receiving the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine directly, instead, it's helping local entities that did receive it.

"We are going to structure this in such a way that we assist other entities within the city and county of Denver to
provide this needed vaccination," said Pixley.

He added he believes in the effectiveness of the vaccine and recommends those eligible, sign up to receive it.

"I recommend my family to get it. I recommend my friends to get it, and most importantly, I recommend my mom to get it," he said.
