DENVER — The Denver Botanic Gardens has something unexpected this summer — gardens named for settings, objects, languages, battles and characters from “Game of Thrones."

"Our horticulturist is very creative," explained Denver Botanic Gardens Communications Manager Erin Bird. "The textures and colors of the flowers are based on different elements of the show."

Horticulturist Bridget Blomquist said she was inspired to name her gardens after visiting the Christian Dior show at the Denver Art Museum.

"I was struck that Christian Dior and his succeeding creative directors named each dress," said Blomquist in a blog she wrote about her inspiration. "The meanings of some dress names are obvious while others are more of a mystery. The names provided something additional to ponder and more significance to each design. I decided right then and there that I will always name my garden designs as they, too, are pieces of art. It no longer mattered what others thought because it is an important and fun part of my creative process."

Some of the names she choose for her annual gardens and pavilion beds this summer include Fire and Ice, Khaleesi, The Rains of Castamere and Red Wedding.
