Baby cut from womb: Lawyers want records tossed

Posted

Attorneys for a woman accused of cutting an unborn baby from another woman's womb are asking a judge to suppress statements their client made to police on the day of her arrest.

The Daily Camera reports attorneys for 35-year-old Dynel Lane argued Tuesday in Boulder District Court that police improperly gathered Lane's statements. The defense also wants the search warrant for Lane's home and search of her social media accounts and other records tossed out.

Lane is charged with attempted murder, unlawful termination of a pregnancy and multiple counts of felony assault.

In March, the baby's mother, Michelle Wilkins, was beaten, had her baby cut from her womb in a home in Longmont where she had gone to buy baby clothes after seeing an ad on Craigslist.

After the attack, Wilkins managed to regain consciousness and call 911 for help. She was rescued and underwent surgery and treatment at Longmont United Hospital.

Hours later, a woman, Dynel Lane, arrived at the same hospital with her husband and the deceased child. She told hospital officials and her husband that she had a miscarriage.

However, according to the arrest report, Lane admitted to a detective that she cut open the victim's abdomen to remove the baby girl. Lane once held a license as a nurses' aide in Colorado.

The prosecution asked the court to deny the motions from the defense.
