DENVER – The University of Colorado’s Denver campus is kicking off the academic year with the biggest and most diverse student body in the school’s history, university officials said.

In a news release Tuesday, CU Denver said its student body totals more than 14,000 students.

The incoming freshman class is especially diverse – officials estimate more than 55 percent of the class are students of color -- and Hispanic students now make up almost 20 percent of the total student body. Final tallies aren’t expected until sometime in September.

The number of international students enrolling at CU Denver also is up this year, officials said.

“We are thrilled to see enrollment rise and are especially proud that nearly half of our undergraduate student body is now comprised of students of color,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Raul Cardenas. “We work hard to ensure our student body reflects our surroundings and to ensure high-quality education is accessible and welcoming to students of all backgrounds.”

CU Denver officials said the university’s on-campus housing complex, Campus Village, is at capacity with more than 700 students opting to live there.

The university’s fall semester began on Monday.
