Crowded buses in Denver area due to lack of drivers

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Transportation officials in the Denver area say they're dealing with a driver shortage that has resulted in crowded buses.

The Daily Camera reports the Regional Transportation District's Flatiron Flyer operates routes connecting Boulder, Denver, Westminster, Broomfield, Louisville and Superior. The bus service saw a 40 percent jump in ridership in 2016 from the previous year.

RTD spokesman Nate Currey says the growth has exceeded the agency's expectations but adding more buses is not an option right now due to a lack of drivers.

Boulder transportation official Kathleen Bracke says the Flatiron Flyer has been an asset to the city but additional service is needed to accommodate residents commuting to work and those heading to the airport.
