JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and crews from Alpine Rescue and the Golden Fire Department recovered human remains from Clear Creek Canyon Sunday.
Recovery efforts began in the morning and were taking place near Tunnel 2 on US 6.
The skeletal remains were found in a remote location near the tunnel. The sheriff's office said the death was not recent and does not appear to be suspicious.
It's unclear when the remains were discovered. The exact location of where the deceased person was found was not disclosed, but Golden Fire-Rescue later said a hiker discovered the remains in a remote area of the canyon off the trail.
The remains were retrieved around 1 p.m. The highway was closed in the area while crews cleared the scene. Deputies were asking motorists to take it slow through that location.
No other details regarding the recovery efforts or who the remains may belong to are known. The coroner’s office will work to identify the person and determine the cause and manner of the death, the sheriff's office said.
The sheriff's office said more information will be released as the investigation progresses.
