AURORA, Colo. – Construction crews will break ground Tuesday on a new, $55-million biosciences facility at the Fitzsimons Innovation Campus in Aurora.

The three-story, 115,000-square-foot building will include laboratory, research, office, warehouse and distribution spaces for a number of companies in the medical field.

The facility will relieve some of the pressure on the two current bioscience buildings, which are home to several dozen companies and are often at capacity, officials said.

Bioscience 3 marks the first step toward the campus’ plans to take over the old Fitzsimons Golf Course, which closed in December. Future plans call for three more bioscience buildings on the 125-acre campus, as well as elementary, middle and high schools, apartments and hotels.

Leaders at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus say the proximity of the Fitzsimons Innovation Campus provides unique opportunities for the medical school.

"This new building is yet another example of how the bioscience innovation process continues to thrive on this campus. It's a virtuous cycle," said CU Anschutz Chancellor Don Elliman. "We're providing a clear path for our faculty to take ideas into the commercial realm, which enables us to attract top talent, who generate further innovation -- all for the ultimate benefit of the health of people in Colorado and beyond."

Bioscience 3 is expected to open in 2019.
