COSTILLA COUNTY, Colo. — The suspect accused of shooting a Costilla County deputy multiple times early Wednesday morning was taken into custody later that day.

The deputy survived the shooting and was considered to be in “stable” condition at a hospital, authorities said.

Jackie Wampler Jr. was arrested by the Costilla County Sheriff’s Department, according to a tweet from the Colorado State Patrol.

Authorities said the deputy was responding to a burglary call at 4:11 a.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Ranches in unincorporated Costilla County near Fort Garland when the shooting occurred.

The sheriff’s office said Wampler allegedly shot the deputy multiple times.

The deputy was transported to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center after the shooting.
