Commission explores feasibility of train route from Ft. Collins to Trinidad

DENVER (AP) — A Colorado commission is examining the viability of developing a passenger train service running along Interstate 25 from Fort Collins to Trinidad.

The Denver Post reports the Southwest Chief and Front Range Passenger Rail Commission briefed lawmakers on Thursday as they're preparing a legislative proposal to keep the project progressing.

The commission has not yet identified a clear price tag or an exact route, and they're still exploring the initial steps such as infrastructure requirements and technology options.

Commission members say their preliminary plan is looking for funding outside the Legislature through avenues such as public-private partnerships, grants and a special district.

Officials estimate it would cost $1 billion to build the necessary infrastructure from Denver to Fort Collins.

The commission is expected to submit draft legislation by December.
