DENVER – A once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon might cause a once-in-a-lifetime traffic nightmare for drivers in Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning motorists of traffic delays and headaches the days before and after the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to Wyoming and Nebraska to experience the totality of the eclipse. Some experts are predicting up to 600,000 additional people just in the state of Wyoming, and CDOT says many of them will be cramming Colorado highways to get there.

Some of the hardest hit corridors will include Interstate 25, where traffic is expected to be heavy through the weekend leading up to the event. CDOT says I-25 traffic will only get worse once the eclipse is complete.

CDOT is partnering with the Colorado State Patrol and the Wyoming Department of Transportation to ensure traffic runs smoothly. Officials are reminding drivers to avoid stopping or pulling over to view the eclipse.
